Choreographer - Tim Darbyshire
Lighting and Set - Bosco Shaw
Tim Darbyshire's stark work required a simple concept and design; something to frame and house the work in a sophisticated and minimalist manner. Using the full height and depth in the North Melbourne Town Hall (NMTH) was something that I have always wanted to do because it is an impressive space replete with possibility for light and compression. A great cavern of a thing.
My design concept was intentionally in line with the concept of the work and involved a single 'source' and a single 'colour'. The 'single colour' translated to incremental chiaroscuros of Blue, with the 'single source' being provided by a top light only. It was mounted centrally in the space in order to open a hole in the NMTH ceiling and thus let the moonlight flood in (a hark to James Turrell perhaps).
Performed at the North Melbourne Town Hall in 2012 and 2013 (as part of Dance Massive 2013).
